In April, the Los Angeles Public Library recognized the winners of the 42nd Annual Bookmark Contest for children in categories of Kindergarten to second grade; grades 3-5; 6-8; and 9 through 12th grades. The contest celebrates the creativity and joys of reading.
From more than 8,000 entries, Topanga Elementary second-grader Vita Cotu’s design won in her age bracket. Her design will be available, along with the other winners, on bookmarks at all libraries throughout Los Angeles County. A video honoring the talented winners is available at https://lacountylibrary.org/bookmark-contest-winner.
Skye Patrick, Director, L.A. County Librairies, also gave “special thanks to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for their help selecting and honoring our winners. For Topanga, that would be Third District Supervisor Sheila Kuehl.
Vita’s mother, Jill Cotu, said her daughter was inspired by the history of reading and drew the design after borrowing a book from the library on how to draw.
“I thought it was kind of cool that she’s representing Topanga, our library, and our school,” she said.
